Helping To Write History
Image There is no denying Barack Obama's abilities as a speaker. His poise and presence is yet another welcomed change to former President Bush's lyrical Nyquil. Throw him in some workout gear and you would swear he was doing neck exercises with the number of times he looks down at his speech paper...down, up, speak, down, up speak, down, down again, speak...you get the point. But perhaps we give too much credit to the man who only has to deliver the speech. Behind the draft of our new President's addresses is a 27 year old from New Hampshire.

Desperate Children Flee Zimbabwe, for Lives Just as Bleak

Image MUSINA, South Africa — They bear the look of street urchins, their eyes on the prowl for useful scraps of garbage and their bodies covered in clothes no cleaner than a mechanic’s rags.

Near midnight, these Zimbabwean children can be found sleeping outside almost anywhere in this border city. A 12-year-old girl named No Matter Hungwe, hunched beneath the reassuring exterior light of the post office, said it was hunger that had pushed her across the border alone.

Where Sweatshops Are A Dream
Image I had dreams when I was 10. They were the NBA, be an astronaut, be a race car driver. In Cambodia, the list for a 10 year old garbage picker begins with find a factory job. Thats a nicer way to say work in a sweatshop. If This Isn’t Slavery, What Is?

ImagePHNOM PENH, Cambodia

Barack Obama’s presidency marks a triumph over the legacy of slavery, so it would be particularly meaningful if he led a new abolitionist movement against 21st-century slavery — like the trafficking of girls into brothels.

Anyone who thinks it is hyperbole to describe sex trafficking as slavery should look at the maimed face of a teenage girl, Long Pross.

Two Sides of Charles

Image Over the last few days, the always entertaining (hate him or love him) Charles Barkley has been the centerpiece of a head shaking DUI arrest. While most of us know Chuck for his ability to hate hard, we seldom hear about his generous ways. Lets rewind the calendar to July when this story came to surface.

CHRISTIAN ABATE majored in education at Temple, but put his studies on hold for a few years while having financial hardship.

He's worked as a busboy for eight years at Saloon (750 S. 7th), where he struck up a friendship with one generous regular at the Italian restaurant who volunteered to pay his Temple tuition.

A Victim Treats His Mugger Right
Image Julio Diaz has a daily routine. Every night, the 31-year-old social worker ends his hour-long subway commute to the Bronx one stop early, just so he can eat at his favorite diner.

But one night last month, as Diaz stepped off the No. 6 train and onto a nearly empty platform, his evening took an unexpected turn.

He was walking toward the stairs when a teenage boy approached and pulled out a knife.

"He wants my money, so I just gave him my wallet and told him, 'Here you go,'" Diaz says.

As the teen began to walk away, Diaz told him, "Hey, wait a minute. You forgot something. If you're going to be robbing people for the rest of the night, you might as well take my coat to keep you warm."
